Fang Xu Art Studio, Princeton, New Jersey
Since 2019, Fang Xu has maintained a teaching studio in Princeton, New Jersey, offering private and small-group instruction in drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and painting. The studio is open to students of all levels, from absolute beginners to those preparing for graduate school applications.
Instruction is grounded in close observation and direct engagement with material. Students work from life, from objects, and from their own developing ideas. The emphasis is on building a rigorous foundation while encouraging each student to find their own visual language.
Classes are available in English and Mandarin. The studio is located in Princeton, NJ, and is accessible from New York City and Philadelphia.

Foundational drawing from life — figure, still life, and spatial composition. Building the visual vocabulary essential to all art-making. Emphasis on proportion, light, and gesture.
Three-dimensional form-making in clay and mixed media. From basic modeling to complex multi-part compositions. Emphasis on spatial thinking and material sensitivity.
Hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Exploration of ceramic as both functional craft and expressive fine art medium. Kiln firing included.
Structured preparation for art school applications. Guidance on portfolio development, artist statement writing, and interview preparation for BFA and MFA programs.
Oil painting technique from ground preparation to layered glazing. Color theory, compositional structure, and the development of a personal visual language.
Survey of modern and contemporary sculpture and painting. Critical frameworks for understanding art in context. Readings, discussion, and studio visits.
